The raisin exercise
About five minutes. One small piece of food. Nothing to get right.
- 1 Holding. Take one small piece of food — a raisin, a square of chocolate, a slice of apple — and rest it in your palm. Imagine you have never seen one before.
- 2 Seeing. Look at it properly. The colour, where the light catches it, the folds and edges. Turn it over. Let your eyes take their time.
- 3 Touching. Roll it between your fingers. Is it smooth, sticky, ridged, soft? Close your eyes if that helps you feel it.
- 4 Smelling. Bring it close to your nose. Notice whatever is there — a strong smell, a faint one, nothing much — and anything that happens in your mouth or stomach as you do.
- 5 Placing. Put it on your tongue without chewing. Notice how your hand knew where to go. Explore it with your tongue for a few moments.
- 6 Tasting. Bite once, slowly. Notice the flavour as it arrives and how it changes. Keep chewing slowly, without swallowing yet.
- 7 Swallowing. When you are ready, notice the intention to swallow before you do it. Then swallow, and follow the sensation as far as you can.
- 8 Afterwards. Sit for a moment. What is left in your mouth, your body, your mind? There is no right thing to have felt.
Afterwards, a few words
What did I notice that I usually miss?
What was my mind doing while I ate?
Anything I'd like to bring to my next meal?

Ready when you are. Find one small piece of food.
The guide moves on every 35 seconds. Pause or skip whenever you like.
How to do it
Find a few quiet minutes and one small piece of food. Read a step, do it slowly, then move to the next — or press Guide me above and the page will step through it for you, about 35 seconds each. Your mind will wander. Noticing that it wandered, and coming back, is the exercise, not a mistake in it.
The point isn't to eat raisins slowly forever. It is to find out what an ordinary mouthful is like when you are actually there for it — and to have that in your pocket at the next meal, even for one bite. The mindful eating explainer covers the practice and the research behind it, and slow eating is the everyday version.
Questions
Does it have to be a raisin?
No. The classic version uses a raisin because it is small and most people stop noticing them, but any single piece of food works. Pick something you can hold in one hand.
How long does it take?
About five minutes. The guided version on this page spends roughly 35 seconds on each step; you can pause or move on whenever you like.
What if I don't like it, or feel nothing much?
That is a perfectly good result. The exercise is practice in noticing, not in enjoying. Boredom, impatience and "is this it?" are all things to notice.
Where does the exercise come from?
It is the eating meditation from Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, the programme Jon Kabat-Zinn developed in the late 1970s, and it is used in many mindfulness and mindful-eating courses. The wording here is ours.
